EP udpate: Days 3 & 4 at Toyland.
Trade secrets, synth patches, horns, sunday gigs and DE PALSY!
Hey guys,
We were back into the studio at Toyland for our third and fourth tracking sessions with Adam on the 29th and 30th of August.
Day 3
Well seeing as we made so much unexpected progress during the first two days of tracking we as a group were naturally very chuffed with our concerted efforts in laying down the nastiness for this new EP. So Lee decided to go to the football instead and as a result of that decision he got very drunk and some hot curry later that evening. His decision to go the football also resulted in a stinky Toyland control room that the little air purifier just couldn't cope with the next day.
But before all the farting followed by laughter Mick had to record the piano tracks and all of his synth patches which was a whole lot of fun to watch from the control room couch. Seriously, it should be televised. This was basically how day 3 went from a musical standpoint so Marin decided to walk aimlessly around the studio taking macro photography of percussive instrument, acoustic foam and diffusion blocks. He surprisingly got some nice shots.
Luke then attempted to replicate Marin's photography with the use of a technique he has mastered during a mis-spent youth known to many as "arsing about". His experiments were mildly unsuccessful.
However a lot of ground was made on one particular number due to Adam and Mick's exploration of piano as an instrument and how hard they could make the song to play. It was a winner.
Day 4
As the day started we say the continuation of the progress from the day before only this time we moved on to the synthesizers because all of that impossible piano was done and dusted.
The majority of the synths were just MIDI so it was very easy for us to import the programmed files and assign them their individual patches and just record them. Once again we were cutting the cheese at a blistering pace. Seriously Lee had shown up today all hung over and extremely gassy from the previous nights exploits.
It should be known that we all do our fair share of farting in this band and the mere fact that Lee particularly excelled on Day 4 should not create the notion that the rest of us were shirking any responsibility or delivery.
We managed to stay well ahead of schedule and even organised a horns section for one of the tracks so Mick decided it was a good a time as ay to begin some vocal takes. None of us expected he'd finish a song though. He did. Happy days.
We finished up at Toyland for the week and Headed off to do a show at the Arthouse with Tin Allay, Lucy's Crown and Amusica. And yes, we rocked.
Cultural learnings from day 3 & 4:
- "De Palsy" is a great thing to say when avoiding payment
- Sunday night gigs are quiet-er but they still rock.
- Booze + Vindaloo = Farts
